Review: Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I did really like this novel. There were a lot of wonderful things about it. Lots of well-developed characters. A very interesting mystery sibling plot point (though I guessed it pretty early on). Interesting use of magic to create more of that fantasy plot. Some nice betrayal…lots of swords, battles, and politics.
So why only a 3.5? I think there may have been too many narratives to follow. By the end of the novel, I’m not invested enough to go ahead and read book 2. Especially when it comes to the main character – I feel like Alexander’s plot was the least developed of the group. So, in the end, I’m left with this uncertainty and lack of connection.
Final score? Closer to a 3.5. This is actually a great YA novel – and pure YA at that. But the multiple narratives might make it really difficult for students to connect quickly. As a high school teacher, I think it is essential that a novel pulls them in fast.
