Review: House of Earth and Blood

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1)House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I wish I could give it a 4.5. It was very good, but not AS good as ACOMAF.

I really enjoyed Danika's characterization and build. I know a lot of people have mentioned that they do not feel a connection to Danika, but after re-reading the novel, I really think that the slow build and depth behind Danika's character is one of the strongest in Maas' series. I'm interested to see what Maas does with Danika's character - whether she completely disappears from the rest of the series (like Nehemia), or if she comes back into play later on.

Sometimes I get a feeling of reincarnation as a possible motif when I read this novel, so I just wouldn't be surprised to see the characters or their souls show up again later. At the end, when Aidas and Jesiba discuss Pelias...I think it would make a lot of sense to see those souls make a difference. Jesiba is now one of the most interesting characters - she has so much potential. She protects the library of Parthos which was supposedly destroyed by the Asteri 15k years ago...I'm not really sure what the ultimate goal is with the library, but no doubt there is a lot of potential for Maas' story weaving.

I cried way too much during this novel. I LOVED the revenge on Micah and cried SO much when my sweet fire sprite sacrificed herself, and again when Danika helped with the drop, and again when Connor waived from the aisle. Ugh. Such beautiful moments.

So for potential theories - I can't help but wonder if Hunt and Bryce have a matching soul (they mention they are mirrors of each other), perhaps in this new world there is some sort of mate of the heart.
Aidas is obviously in love with Bryce already - that will make a big difference later on.
The 7th Asteri being killed....I think that might have a lot more to do with the novel than we realize.
I think Ruhn will play a huge part, BUT HE BETTER NOT DIE. I will NEVER forgive you, Maas. I love Ruhn too damn much already. AND I already love the dynamic between Ruhn, Bryce, Flynn, and Declan.

Anyways - this was a great re-read. Now I'm off to read Book 2!!! Wish me luck!
