Review: Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young

Spells for ForgettingSpells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received an arc of this novel from NetGalley- I’ve read everything Adrienne Young has written, so you can imagine how excited I was to get my hands on her newest series.

So it takes place off the coast of Oregon on a little island inhabited by locals who have lived there for generations, and it begins with August Salt returning to the island, after 14 years, to bury his mother. There are a couple of narrators, but Emery and August make up most of the narrative. High school sweethearts with childhood trauma-14 years ago they were torn apart by their families.

The island is steeped in magic and superstition, so the beginning of the piece is full of omens and foreshadowing. The big mystery? 14 years ago, on the same day as graduation, and the day before Emery and August plan to leave the island forever, there is a fire at the orchard (a piece of land the locals have fought over for centuries). AND Emery’s best friend, Lily, is found murdered. Everyone on the island thinks it was August so he and his mom leave the island early one morning for good…until now. His first return in 14 years. As you can imagine, this gets everyone on the island worked up which leads to a seriously screwed up ending lol. So there you go. A witchy, murder mystery by Adrienne Young.

Final thoughts? It was okay. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars, nut I’m really at more of a 3.6.
