Review: Daughter of the Moon Goddess

Daughter of the Moon Goddess (The Celestial Kingdom Duology, #1)Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I loved this novel! In fact, I love all of these beautiful Asian folklore novels I keep reading. (Poppy War, Moon Goddess, Crimson Cranes.) They are all rich in detail and they share beautiful storylines. I’m not surprised about Wenzhi, but I’m still undecided about which boy I love more! I can’t say that the female protagonist was fierce and had a wonderful storyline.

So I’m trying to think how I’d sell this to teenagers, I’m thinking: girl secretly born to immortal moon goddess and a famous mortal archer goes undercover in the celestial kingdom in the hopes that she’ll find a way to free her mother. She gets a job as a maid to a selfish, beautiful noble girl and one night as she is crying a beautiful boy stumbles upon her. They spend hours talking only to be interrupted by the noble woman and threatened until the boy reveals that he is actually the prince. He convinces her to join a competition to become his companion and once she wins they spend every day together studying and learning everything from battle strategy to magic to archery. Years pass and slowly the friends grow older and fall in love until the night that the prince announces his engagement. Broken hearted, she throws herself into the military seeing the world, battling monsters, and saving princes. During this time she becomes extremely close to the mysterious commander who cares for her deeply. Until she is sent on one final mission that change everything and test her loyalties to the celestial kingdom. The truths she uncovers about her prince, commander, and the celestial kingdom will rock the foundation of everything she’s known.
