Review: House of Sky and Breath

House of Sky and Breath House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

YO. I have SO many theories. This was an insane ride through Maas' mind. After reading Throne of Glass and ACOTAR, I'm always trying to guess what she has in mind for me. I love her ability to weave a story and still ACTUALLY shock me. I'm hardly ever surprised by authors with Maas as my ONE exception.

Okay, first off. I think a 4.4 for the rating. This sucker was so long. Just because Maas is a brilliant writer, it does NOT mean her editors should NOT cut some sections. I think we could have easily removed a good 100 or so pages.

However, on that note, the ending was absolutely brilliant. There are so many great idea to follow in the next book - this is exactly what keeps her readers re-reading the novels and talking about theories. That and her ability to characterize. I love Ruhn and his entire character build. Literally, every bit of him. I EVER loved that he fell in love with (and is clearly mated with) the Hind. Honestly, the Hind seems to me like a Rhysand character. Someone who is willing to throw her own soul through hell - even her mate - if it means they may be able to destroy their enemies. I am more interested in her character arc than anything for book 3. But...back to Ruhn. There is so much love and support in that familial relationship. Even when he finds out where his 'light' is from - I even wonder if there might be a reincarnation tie here - perhaps he is supposed to make up for the past. I have no theories for his dad though. I'm thinking the orrery in their house has something to do with the Autumn King being onto the Asteri, but I can't explain away his cruelty.

Flynn and Dec are great. I would also love to see more of their characterization. They aren't quite Cassian and Azriel level friends, but they absolutely have the potential.

I keep hearing that people are sick of hearing about Danika, but I think Danika is the Nehemia of the series. She knew that her death would spurr it all and be worth the sacrifice. I think Sabine will even come through in the end...I can't help but wonder or hope that Sabine will find a way to ally with Bryce.

Hunt is my beautiful, loyal, strong angel. His love and sacrifice - good gosh. It is just so sweet. Sometimes I wonder if Shahar didn't have an ulterior motive from the beginning. Ephraim and Celestina were freaking useless, though I hope that Ephraim turns out to be on that Ophion council. He didn't have enough character development to point to friend or foe.

Alright, so now for my FINAL ideas and possible spoilers...

Now here is the more interesting thing...
So in ACOTAR, Amren says a couple of things. That she was 'a messenger and soldier-assassin for a wrathful god'. She drinks blood, loves and hoard baubles, etc...Amren used to watch humans in her world and saw how they loved, but never understood it until Varian. Then, when she is unbound she becomes a being of pure light and fire with burning feathers wings and a crown of light. THEN I think she plunges into the cauldron and essentially goes through the Ordeal and the drop with Rhysand as her tether. So year - I think that she is either A. a dragon (what was the point for the dragon, Ari?), and was bred to assassinate the Asteri OR B. She IS THE SEVENTH ASTERI.

Also, Azriel is OBVIOUSLY a long-lost Avallen Prince. I don't know if I think that Cormac actually died...he could have easily winnowed away....I think it would be nice if Azriel and Cormac developed a friendship later since Cormac seems so lonely all the time. Cormac has hinted at some of what he went through with his father...I'm really interested in the truth-teller connection.

ALSO, RHYSAND LOOKS LIKE RUHN. I mean, that means that they are family! That Bryce is family to Rhysand. And after losing his own sister, I think he will fight through Hel and Midgard to help her. I mean, there is no way that these aren't all going to overlap somehow.

Nesta - I'm starting to think that her power is similar to Bryce's. I mean, she took something from the cauldron, so could it have been a power like first light? I need to re-read...And they were talking about the shifters forgetting who they are, and it just reminded me of Tamlin being a shifter.

So, that's all for now. I'm super intrigued to see this play out.
