Review: The War of Two Queens

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I actually enjoyed this one – I know a lot of people are bashing it, and I am DEFINITELY in agreement with some (or many) of their reasons, BUT there were some things I loved.
I loved the development with Kieran - especially in the first 60 or so percent (pre-Casteel).
There is no doubt in my mind that there was some uncomfortable flirting, it was obvious she was trying to warn us that the Joining was coming….I don’t know that it was necessary for the development. It did feel unnecessarily weird and uncomfortable. I wish that Kieran had a love interest of his own – he is a character that we all loved greatly, and to see him find someone would have been wonderful.
I loved Reaver, but I thought the rivalry between him and Kieran was a little overdone. It never really went anywhere either – there were times during the trip to Carsodonia where I forgot Reaver was even with them.
Oh, Cas!! My sweet, loyal Cas. I find it so unlikely that Poppy would focus on diplomacy after she saw the state he was in. I was ready for fire and death and got half of what I wished.
There were a lot of ties to Sera and Ash’s novel. I kept wanting to see an overlay of both of the maps to get an idea of where they were in comparison. And for that final big reveal …. The enemy of all of the books – I think it felt right, but…I don’t know. A day after finishing the novel I sit here wondering what the point was. I’ve lost some of my love for all of the characters. I’m trying to put my finger on it – was it the lack of NEW development? Was it the fact that nothing was done for 60% of the novel? Was it what the old lady did to my drakon’s? I don’t know. There is just something missing that is keeping me from connecting like I did at the beginning of the series.
I know people hate when we compare the two (Maas and Armentrout), but there is something so wonderful about the way that Maas writes. I could (and have) re-read her novels several times each, but Armentrout’s don’t hold me like the others.
