I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston: Review

I Kissed Shara WheelerI Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

First thoughts: kick ass start quote and so unbelievably perfect after that first chapter. Hilarious. The one-liners crack me up so much - absolutely hilarious. The witty retorts from the main character almost make the novel worth reading.

Final thoughts: I did not personally find this book as interesting as I would have liked. I wouldn’t say it is an overnight read. The pace at the beginning is just too slow. By the end of the novel, everything is wrapped up in such an unrealistic happy bow that it just felt off to me. Plus, I feel like it has a pretty niche audience. I wouldn’t suggest this to someone who hasn’t already read a LOT of lgbtq+ romances. The first 60% of this novel was just difficult to get through because it went on for a LONG time.

How am I already sick of the jock who is not a total jock- but is actually just misunderstood? Or the perfect student who actually turns out to be secretly lgbtq+? The stoner who is secretly lonely? Or worse- the pseudo ya mystery where teenagers either leave clues for one another or struggle to solve those clues?

Honestly, I guess what it comes down to is a lack of chemistry. From the beginning of the novel, I don’t care about shara- so I’m just confused as to why any of them care enough to look for her. She's just a shit person. Even by the end of the novel, there just isn't enough of a redemption mark to stan their relationship.

Ultimately, I almost DNFd it several times. I had an instant connection with McQuiston’s last book, so maybe I started Shara with too high of expectations…

Spicy scale: chaste lgbtq+ kissing. No rated R scenes.
